How this 4 team single elimination bracket works

Four teams is the smallest bracket that still feels like a tournament: two semifinals, one final, three games, one champion.

The math is simple and worth knowing: a single elimination tournament with 4 teams always takes exactly 3 games, because every game eliminates exactly one team and only the champion survives. That number never changes no matter how you seed or schedule, which makes planning venue time easy.

4 is a perfect power of two, so there are no byes — every team plays in the first round and the bracket is balanced from top to bottom. The 2 rounds run Semifinals, Final.

Seeding follows the standard nested pattern: seed 1 plays the lowest seed, seed 2 plays the second-lowest, and the pairings are arranged so that 1 and 2 cannot meet before the final, and the top four cannot meet before the semifinals. You do not need to remember any of this — type the names in seed order and the bracket places every team where it belongs.

One thing this bracket deliberately does not do is re-seed. Winners advance along fixed lines, so the path from the first round to the final is fully visible before a single game is played. That is what makes a printed sheet work: every possible matchup is already drawn, players can trace their own road to the final, and the scorekeeper just fills in winners as results come in.

Running a blind draw instead? Nothing to configure. Leave the seeds alone, pull names out of a hat, and type them onto the lines in the order you draw them. The bracket does not care whether the lines hold seeds or strangers — it prints the same either way.

When play starts, write each winner on the next line down the tree and, if you like, jot the score beside the matchup. The last line on the sheet is the champion. Everything on the page is sized so handwriting fits — the lines are the same height whether you type into them on screen or fill them in with a pen after printing.

This size shows up everywhere — the final four of a longer league season, a quick office ping pong showdown, a family board game night, a four-player esports showmatch. Because there are only two rounds, you can comfortably run it in a single evening, and a printed sheet taped to the wall is genuinely the best scoreboard.

With only four teams, seeding matters more than usual. One upset in the semifinals and the bracket is half rewritten, so take the time to rank the teams honestly before you fill the names in. If the four teams are truly even, a blind draw keeps everyone happy.

Type the names now or print the blank sheet and fill it in by hand — both work, and nothing you type is ever sent anywhere. When the bracket is ready, use your browser's print function; the page is laid out for a single landscape sheet with the header, round labels and champion line exactly where a wall bracket needs them.
